These words by the famous poet
and dramatist Shakespeare highlight a very important aspect of human existence.
People are afraid of adversities. They shun difficulties and move towards
comfort and luxury. But Shakespeare emphasized a different opinion. For him,
the toad that looks poisonous and ugly has a jewel in its head. Similarly,
adversity that looks dangerous and fearful has many sweet uses. The benefits of
adversity can be realized after understanding its meaning and nature. It refers
to any unpleasant, harmful, or negative situation faced by individuals which
might lead to a disastrous outcome. When things seem to be going against the
luck of people, they assume that the consequences are going to be adverse.
These negative situations may take any form, for instance; physical abuse and
exploitation, indirect social pressures, and mental disturbances are generally
regarded to be leading towards long-term failures But this Is not always the
case. Adversity is a blessing in disguise. If it is faced with courage,
efficiency, and confidence, it can prove to be a way towards achievement and
success.
Fortune and misfortune are two
sides of the same coin. Favorable and adverse situations are not two distinct
concepts. They are interrelated and interdependent. When there are good times,
there are bad ones too. Man’s life course is never smooth and easy. Ups and
downs are a natural part of life. Hunger, disease, disappointment, frustration,
poverty, and misery, all form an essential part of man’s life. They cannot be
avoided; they have to be faced either willingly or unwillingly. These
situations prove to be dangerous for those who do not have the willpower and
courage to face them. On the other hand, those who face these problems with
strength and heroic spirit achieve success later on.
Man is, by nature, luxury-oriented. He is easygoing and idle-oriented and wants to get things without striving for them. However, the higher goals are always concealed behind the difficulties. One has to get through them to achieve the goals. The people who do not know how to face stress and overcome the storms of life are overcome by these storms. They are forced to live in suffering and cannot develop their qualities beyond a limit. But those who struggle and fight these misfortunes have the power to turn them into fortunes.
History bears witness to the fact that the world's greatest men encountered
significant challenges but ultimately achieved remarkable success. Though they
have departed from this world, their legacy endures, ensuring they are
remembered both now and in the future. As R.B. Makhram eloquently put it, they are born out of the ashes of adversity.
So, Difficulties are the ladders
on which we climb to success. Nothing great can be achieved, or has ever been
achieved, without grappling with difficulties.
Such people left ever-lasting examples in the history of mankind but on the contrary, those who were afraid of such situations persisted in failure. The following examples of great men illustrate the benefits of combating adverse situations.
Misfortunes make man. Albert
Einstein, the great genius, passed through various hard luck situations
throughout his life but never left his determination and motivation. In
childhood, he was expelled from school because his attitude hurt serious
students; he failed his university entrance exam and had to attend a trade
school for one year before finally being admitted; and was the only one in his
graduating class who did not get a teaching position because no professor would
recommend him. One professor said Einstein was “the laziest dog" the
university ever had. But despite all this, he made the best use of his
imaginary thoughts and concepts which brought revolutionary ideas about space
and time and he emerged as a great genius. He said,
“Adversity introduces a man to
himself"
Another similar example is Thomas
Edison, the guy who had only two years of formal schooling, was deaf in one ear
and was hard of hearing in the other, was fired from his first job as a newsboy
and later fired from his job as a telegrapher. Still, he became the most
famous inventor in the history of the U.S. Thomas Edison created 3000 different
ideas for lighting systems before he evaluated them for practicality and
profitability.
If these and many other great men
had lost their hopes while confronting difficulties and become disappointed,
they could never have achieved such remarkable statuses. So, misfortune is a
sign indicating that fortune lies ahead. It is a challenge for man to keep
struggling to reach his goals
Man does not lack potential <
resources or power. He has been provided
with so much internal strength that if he makes effective use of it, he will be
at the top of the world. But it is a matter
of willpower. Those who rely on their inner
capabilities succeed while others look for help from different sources Whatever
the source of help might be, internal or
external, it never goes
unrewarded. So, instead of dwelling in
the past and fearing the future, man should be confident of his capabilities
and try to utilize them as best as he can An English scholar P. D.
James said, “Don't let what's happened spoil your life; it doesn't have to. If
help is offered,
take it if
you want it
But in the
end, find the strength
to take hold
of your own
life and make
what you want
of it Even bad dreams fade in time.”
The commonly used notion of
"Never give up" underscores the perspective of persevering through
challenging circumstances. Hope, determination, willpower, and the drive to
progress are the essential elements that steer individuals on the right path.
The stock exchange serves as a prime example of this principle. When the market
experiences a downturn and investors are tempted to despair, believing that
such adversity will inevitably result in long-term financial losses, failure
may seem imminent. However, by embracing the challenge and adapting trading
strategies to include different commodities or currencies, investors can
potentially yield significant profits. It is the aspiration for success that
fuels human perseverance, and such aspirations rarely go unrewarded.
The divine religion also sets
examples in this regard. Islam guides man to remain courageous in difficult situations
and wait for a positive outcome. Human beings have been advised to struggle, no
matter how hard the situation is because it is a struggle that leads to
positive rewards from Allah.
“Certainly We have created man to
struggle.” (Quran 90:4)
The Messenger of Allah (PBUH)
showed us by his example how to behave in adverse circumstances. For instance,
when the citizens of Ta'if met the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) and his Companions
and were invited to accept Islam, they responded bitterly. They hailed them
with stones; the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) was bleeding. But it was not the
toughest ordeal of his life - In fact, there were even worse times. When the
Messenger of Allah (pbuh) made a prostration near the Kaaba, the pagans began
throwing the guts of stabbed animals at him, but he (pbuh) endured it too.
These stories are countless. The main thing is that, despite all this, the
Prophet (pbuh) did not give up his determination and cause. He was steady in
his purpose therefore; he remained indifferent to all the hardships. He
preached the same to his Companions. Instead of avenging the cruelty to him and
his followers, the Prophet (pbuh) prayed to Allah for them. He (PBUH) did not
even think about revenging the citizens of Ta'if. Instead, he requested Allah
to guide them to the path of Truth. The result of striving through hardships
was the blessing that Islam spread like a wave in various parts of the world.
These hardships could not suppress them but instead, they became successful in
fulfilling their mission.
The benefits of adversity do not
remain confined to the long term only, but several other aspects come to face
when one is confronted with hazardous situations. For example, adversity proves
to be a test of one's friendships.
Prosperity makes friends,
adversity tries them
This shows that when fortune is in
favor of man and he is powerful, he gets everyone's friendship and support
easily. But the reality is concealed when things turn upside down. In adverse
situations, the good can become bad. the sincerity can become artificial. It is
during these times when a man can test his relationships because a true friend
remains a good supporter of good and evil. Because a friend in need is a friend
in deed, hardships can act as a test of foes and friends.
Another aspect of adversity is
that it saves man from becoming mad at power. A person who has never tasted the
fruit of bitterness in life and has no idea of hardships and difficulties is
not likely to understand the feelings and emotions of those who have
experienced such problems. The one, who has never undergone the strains and
stresses of misfortune, cannot deal with the social problems effectively.
Unless one has. been unhappy, he cannot realize the worth of happiness
Lastly, effective dealing with the problems of today prepares a man for the problems of tomorrow.
Adversity is a great teacher (J.J. Rousseau)
When our success is distorted by our failures, we try to think where we have erred or actually where the fault lies. It gives us a chance to mend the things for future. Misery develops a sense of sympathy for others.
Thus, the short-term difficulty
of today may lead to long-term benefits in the future. After one has struggled
hard and achieved the goal, past adversity is forgotten. Misfortune vanishes in
the light of success. Adversity is a test of time to judge a person's
motivation and determination towards his cause. If he surrenders during this
test, this means that he has accepted his defeat and if he accepts the
challenge and responds with full efforts, he becomes successful.
"A pessimist
sees the difficulty
in every opportunity; an optimist
sees the opportunity in every
difficulty." (Winston Churchill)
In a nutshell, the adversity itself is not good or bad. It depends upon the person and what he tries to make out of it. Either a person can overcome the difficulty or let the difficulty overcome him. So, one should try to make the best possible use of his efforts no matter how hard the situation is, because this hardness later on proves to be fruitful.
